Travel insurance

Travel insurance is important for anyone who is coming to the United Kingdom from overseas. Travel insurance can cover a number of different expenses and possible catastrophes, from health care management to lost luggage.

Other types of travel insurance are designed to help travelers retain money for cancelled trips or lost luggage. While it is always a good idea to keep valuables close to your person in your carry-on luggage, travel insurance to cover lost luggage is also available.

If you end up having to cancel your trip at the last minute, travel insurance can help to reclaim some or all of your expenses.

Sometimes, insurance is included with tickets when purchased through an agency or included through your credit card. Delegates should check and if insurance is not included they should investigate taking out a separate policy to cover travel and health care management costs.

Before purchasing travel health insurance please check any existing policies to see if you are covered for overseas trips.

Cheap travel insurance can usually be found through independent companies on the web or via high street travel agencies and insurance companies.  You should expect to pay about 5% of the cost of your trip.   As a rule, travel insurance for sale at the airport is usually quite expensive and should be avoided except as a last resort.

Eligibility for health treatment in the UK*
The National Health Service (NHS) is primarily for the benefit of people who live in this country. It is therefore considered that eligibility to receive free medical treatment should relate to whether a person is ordinarily resident in the United Kingdom (UK) and not to nationality, the payment of National Insurance contributions or taxes.

However:-
  • Treatment within an accident and emergency department, or emergency/ immediately necessary treatment from a GP is free to overseas visitors.
  • European economic area (EEA) nationals carrying Form E128 are fully eligible for NHS treatment.
  • Some visitors to the UK may carry a Form E112, which entitles them to seek treatment for a specific condition
